Irish Culture

irish-luck-card

Music, dance, sport, drinking and poetry all combine to create a heady cultural  in Ireland. Known for their hearty cheer, the Irish combine the best of their Celtic and Viking roots and modern influences and habits.

St. Patrick’s Day began in Ireland as a Catholic holiday, but over the years particularly in the last twenty, it has become a festival as much as a holy day. Though the first parades in the United States were begun by Irish immigrants to fight for equal rights, the St. Patrick’s Day parades one sees today in Ireland are as a result of American influence.

James Joyce is probably the most important writer to have emerged from Ireland. His novel Ullysses is considered the most significant work in Modern literature. Ireland has also produced as many as four Nobel prize winners for literature: George Bernard Shaw, William Butler Yeats and Samuel Beckett.
